[LINUX] Use Chinese fanless NAS with OpenWRT (LEDE)

Introduction

When converting a Chinese fanless NAS to Linux and operating it as an "always-start power-saving Linux server" I'm addicted to various things, so I'll expose the memo. What I did is based on srchack.org's this article, I tried to do my best in my own way and got into various big accidents, but There were almost no solutions on overseas sites, so I will leave a footprint.

Originally, I used the IO data RockDisk Next, and I'm still not in trouble with active duty, but As expected, linux kernel 2.6.31 is too old (10 years ago ...), Even if you build a gcc environment, most OSSs are too old to build, so I have also found an article by srchack.org, so I have selected it. I bought it for about 3,600 yen at the 11.1 sale of aliexpless last year. It seems that you can still buy it around the Blue endless Official Store in aliexpless.

Anything was fine, but the important points are as follows.

In the domestic market, fanless small NAS kits are extinct, There are examples of building NAS around Raspberry Pi and Orange Pi, but Rather than connecting the HDD case and the main unit with a cable separately It is a desire to build a NAS with one power supply and box.

In addition, Wifi is also attached, but there is also a problem of technical suitability, In the first place, NAS is "the network is stable", so disable it and use it.

About KIMAX BS-U35WF

srchack.org's article is enough, Although it is a MediaTek chip, it seems to be an SoC that follows the flow of Ralink. It is MIPS, not ARM type. The Raspberry Pi may be good for those who are tired of it and are looking for an environment that is likely to be worth playing with.

Failure 1: Full reset is required when using OpenWRT

As mentioned in srchack.org's article, With the standard interface of BS-U35WF, it eats the farm of OpenWRT / LEDE, Did you forget to enable a checkbox somewhere? It became a ridiculous state to say "Farm update while keeping under / etc". It's just Linux, but / etc / passwd is factory default and I don't know the root password. It is a state that can not be helped.

In the OpenWRT community, about Factory Reset, etc. There are various other information, and I tried it, but all of them are NG and will not be accepted. I analyzed it seriously so that it could not be compared with the business hours at the company, but there is nothing I can do about it.

The last resort is a UART drawer, I think it's easy because there is a pin in srchack.org's article, It seems that the board has been changed, probably because of cost reduction. Unfortunately, the latest boards have flexible connections, Soldering will be required. I'm pretty dangerous, but I managed to get UART access by fixing the copper wire with cellophane tape.

Now you can log in as root and update the firmware again including / etc.

Failure 2: Is the latest environment introduction NG?

Since OpenWRT is an active distribution, I want to build the latest version of the environment, but This was the basis of the failure. The OpenWRT community also has a solid description of the U35WF page (https://openwrt.org/toh/blueendless/blueendless_u35wf). When I read this, I feel that it seems to work with the latest version of 19.07, but when I get on it, it fails.

First of all, if you use the RC version, the GUI (http access) function may not be included. I updated to the farm of 19.07.1.4 and GUI access was NG, ssh did not connect due to the reason of failure 1 mentioned above, I am indebted to UART.

Then, based on the speculation that there is no problem if it is a stable board, I put in 19.07 and it seemed to work, but When I finish the initial setup of Linux and try to format the HDD, The HDD is not recognized for some reason.

Even in the article by srchack.org, it was said that the correspondence was not incorporated in the head family, so Obediently, by bringing LEDE 17.01.4 from https://github.com/arvati/lede-U35WF and writing it, The kernel version has dropped a bit, (Much better than RockDisk Next's kernel 2.6.31.) Finally, I was able to confirm the minimum functions as a NAS safely.

I haven't debugged very seriously, Since the HDD is connected via a small board, There may be a difference in the log around 10000638.gpio.

Bug support (bonus)

First of all, I tried to upgrade it as LEDE17.01, opkg update fails.

root@LEDE:~# opkg update

Collected errors:
 * opkg_download: Failed to download http://downloads.lede-project.org/releases/17.01.4/packages/mipsel_24kc/accesscontrol/Packages.gz, wget returned 8.

In the first place, even if you look at the latest package, there is no access control, so I think the correct answer is to delete it from the settings, so Delete the following information.

/etc/opkg/distfeeds.conf

src/gz reboot_accesscontrol http://downloads.lede-project.org/releases/17.01.4/packages/mipsel_24kc/accesscontrol

Summary

Here are some tips for replacing the OS of your NAS or router with OpemWRT / LEDE, etc. on your own. It may be a special case, but if you get stuck, you may want to give it a try.

  1. Make sure that you are not set to back up under / etc when updating the firmware
  2. The latest distribution is not always optimal (may only be reflected in the branch)

Let's have a good life with a power-saving Linux server!
