Notes on what to do if Ubuntu 20.04 installation on Virtual box 6.1 (Windows10) fails with "Error 5 Input / output error"
It took a lot of time to build an Ubuntu environment for home study, so I will leave a note for the future.
Prerequisite environment
Windows10 Pro VirtualBox 6.1 Ubuntu 20.04 (I want to put it in)
Installation failure
There is nothing to talk about from ISO download to virtual machine creation, so I will omit it. This article has detailed instructions.
If you select the boot hard disk and proceed with the installation, Immediately after the input form for the computer name etc. was displayed, the following error occurred.
[Errno 5] Input / output error seems to be an input / output error due to a defect in the CD / DVD drive. The workaround is "cleaning the disk drive" ... Virtual Box ...?
Solutions
There was an entry in askUbuntu. Apparently it looks like a bug in VirtualBox? Error when installing Ubuntu 20.04 in VirtualBox
- Open Enable or Disable Windows Features
- [Control Panel]-> [Programs]-> [Turn Windows features on or off])
- Uncheck hyper-v, Windows hypervisor platform, virtual machine platform
- It may not be available. There was no hyper-v in my environment, and the hypervisor platform was originally disabled.
- Start command prompt with administrator privileges
- Execute
bcdedit / set hypervisorlaunchtype off
- Bcdedit is a command to manage boot configuration data (BCD). Line tool.
- Restart your PC
You have successfully completed the installation.
